Washed-up Politicians awarded in King’s Birthday Honours List
The King’s Birthday Honours List saw many of Australia’s former politicians being awarded this year. The tradition of honouring washed-up politicians to mark the sovereign’s birthday still continues despite the change in monarch. The former Liberal West Australian Premier Colin Barnett and former Labor Minister Jenny Macklin were made Companions of the Order of Australia. Also, journalist-turned-politician Maxine McKew was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia. The list this year also included Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, a few lesser-known figures, and several former National Party members. The list this year has been renamed after more than half a century as the King’s Birthday Honours.
Editorial
The King’s Birthday Honours List is an event that provides an opportunity to honour individuals for their outstanding contributions and accomplishments in various fields. However, the list has been criticised for repeatedly giving awards to ex-politicians who have often been forgotten by the public. The former politicians may have contributed a lot to the country during their time in office, but it is important to recognise the achievements of individuals from other fields as well. These may include artists, scientists, humanitarians, and other social reformers. Awarding unrecognized or lesser-known people can also inspire others to follow their example.
Furthermore, the Honours List also sparks the discussion about the importance of Honours and Awards. Many believe that they are an essential way to recognise and celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to society. On the other hand, there is a debate on the usefulness of honours and the value attached to them in today’s society.
Philosophical Discussion
Philosophers have long discussed why humans seek recognition and honours throughout their lives. One possible explanation is that humans are inherently social beings. Recognition and honours are a way of acknowledging this social nature. It is also believed that recognition helps in enhancing an individual’s self-confidence and self-esteem. However, the drive for recognition and honours can also lead to self-promotion, unhealthy competitions, and feelings of superiority over others.
It is pertinent to ask whether Honours and Awards should be awarded to recognize ordinary achievements or only for extraordinary ones. Critics argue that recognising ordinary achievements could lead to an expectation of reward for every action. However, supporters argue that even small contributions can bring significant impact. It is also important to consider who is selected for honors, whether it is an individual who holds an influential position in society or not.
Advice
The Honours List is a vital way to acknowledge the contributions of individuals who work tirelessly for the betterment of others. As a society, we should look beyond politicians and recognise the hard work from diverse fields, such as art, science, and social work. Awards and recognitions should also inspire new generations to follow the example of the recipient and give back to society. Finally, whilst recognition can be an integral part of human society, competition and the need for validation should never replace the importance of the work done and the positive impact it has on society.
