AGL Signs Major Wind Farm Agreement with Tilt Renewables

AGL Energy, one of Australia’s leading energy companies, has announced a significant power purchase agreement (PPA) with Tilt Renewables. This agreement will allow AGL to purchase electricity generated from the Rye Park Wind Farm in New South Wales.
This deal is particularly significant as it is the first PPA signed since AGL and its partners, QIC and the Future Fund, acquired Tilt Renewables’ Australian operations in 2021. It also marks the first opportunity for AGL to access Tilt Renewables’ platform.
AGL’s Chief Operating Officer, Markus Brokhof, emphasized that this agreement is a crucial step in the company’s energy transition journey. As AGL aims to expand its portfolio of renewable generation assets and decarbonize its customer demand, this PPA with Tilt Renewables will play a key role.
Under the 15-year agreement, AGL will purchase approximately 45% of the output of Rye Park, which corresponds to around 513 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually. This renewable energy will power approximately 90,000 Australian homes starting from April 2025.
By sourcing electricity from the Rye Park Wind Farm, AGL will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The 513 GWh of energy per year is equivalent to removing approximately 110,000 average Australian internal combustion engine cars from the road annually. This move towards renewable energy demonstrates AGL’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions for its operated Scope 1 and 2 by 2035.
Tilt Renewables’ Executive General Manager and Operations, Damien Sanford, expressed pride in the partnership with AGL. Sanford stated that this offtake agreement is a milestone for Tilt Renewables and the Rye Park Wind Farm, as it ensures that all renewable energy from the project is fully contracted for an initial term of 15 years.
Construction of the Rye Park Wind Farm began in December 2021 and is expected to be fully operational by mid-2024. Once completed, the wind farm will have a total capacity of 396MW, contributing significantly to Australia’s clean energy goals.
