Mike Yarwood: A Comedy Legend Remembered

Tribute to an Icon

Mike Yarwood, the celebrated impressionist and satirist, passed away on Friday at the age of 82. Known for his spot-on impersonations of politicians, celebrities, and royals, Yarwood was regarded as a household name in the 1960s and 1970s. His talent and charismatic performances paved the way for many aspiring impressionists and comedians who followed in his footsteps.

Among those paying tribute to Yarwood is fellow impressionist Rory Bremner, who credits him as a major source of inspiration. Bremner acknowledges that without Yarwood’s influence and the trail he blazed, he might not have pursued a career in impressions. Speaking on BBC Radio 4, Bremner expressed his gratitude, saying, “He kicked the door down, and he turned impressions from being a kind of specialist act into top of the bill entertainment, a Saturday night affair.”

Alistair McGowan, another talented impressionist, also shared his memories of Yarwood and the impact he had on the comedy industry. McGowan once had the opportunity to work with Yarwood when he was just starting out. He described Yarwood as a generous and inspiring individual, emphasizing Yarwood’s ability to capture not just the voices but also the physicality of the personalities he impersonated.

An Enduring Legacy

Yarwood’s 1977 Christmas special, which still holds the record for the highest-ever single Christmas Day audience, was a testament to his popularity and talent. However, despite his remarkable success, McGowan believes that impressionists often struggle to receive the recognition they deserve. Unlike shows like the Two Ronnies or Morecambe and Wise, which are consistently rebroadcasted, impressionists’ TV shows can be overlooked due to their topical nature. As McGowan explains, “So you don’t get repeated in the same way, and Mike didn’t get repeated the way the Two Ronnies or Morecambe and Wise have always been repeated. Their stuff is seen as timeless, but Mike’s was of an era, and we don’t get the same recognition.”

Nevertheless, Yarwood’s talent and ability to bring joy to people of all ages should not be forgotten. His comedic prowess and iconic impressions, such as those of Frankie Howerd, Larry Grayson, and Bruce Forsyth, showcased his exceptional skill and attention to detail. Although his material was considered topical, the essence of his performances continues to captivate audiences. Today, we remember Mike Yarwood as a comedic legend who entertained and inspired generations.

Rest in peace, Mike Yarwood.
