‘Can’t believe it’: Matildas ‘very emotional’ after Cathy Freeman’s inspirational visit
The Australian women’s football team, known as the Matildas, were left “very emotional” after a special visit from Australian sporting legend Cathy Freeman. Freeman, who won the gold medal in the 400m event at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, joined the team in Melbourne last Wednesday. Freeman is considered a sporting hero by “over half the team” and has long been an inspiration for the players.
Recreating a ‘Cathy Freeman moment’
Matildas captain Sam Kerr has repeatedly expressed her desire to lead Australia to World Cup glory and create her own ‘Cathy Freeman moment’. Freeman’s visit to the team was a dream come true for the players, who see her as an idol and a symbol of inspiration. During the visit, Kerr expressed her gratitude to Freeman, saying, “You’re an inspiration to the whole team… We’ll remember this night for the rest of our careers.”
Aivi Luik, a veteran player of the Matildas, revealed that many of the girls were overwhelmed with emotion during Freeman’s visit. Luik expressed disbelief that someone they admired so much would take the time to meet with them. She shared that Freeman spoke to the team informally, answering their questions and providing them with valuable insights.
The power of inspiration
Freeman, in turn, spoke to the Matildas about the impact they have as athletes and the power of their presence. She told them, “The power of you just being here is unimaginable… You’re writing your name in history, ladies. And you should be really proud of that.” Freeman emphasized the importance of believing in oneself and not losing sight of the love for the sport.
Luik reflected on Freeman’s advice, highlighting her ability to perform under immense pressure during the Sydney Olympics. Luik remarked that as a team, the Matildas are fortunate to have each other for support, which Freeman did not have as an individual athlete. The visit from Freeman left the team feeling inspired and motivated, and they see themselves as part of a larger movement to inspire the nation and believe in women’s football.
An iconic stadium, a historic match
Australia’s opening match of the tournament is scheduled against Ireland on Thursday night in Sydney, taking place at the same stadium where Freeman made history in 2000. The symbolic connection to Freeman’s iconic win adds an extra layer of motivation for the Matildas as they aim to leave their own lasting legacy.
Cathy Freeman’s visit serves as a reminder of the power of athletic inspiration and the impact it can have on individuals and teams. Her presence and words of wisdom have undoubtedly left a profound impression on the Matildas, fueling their determination to excel in the upcoming World Cup.
As the tournament unfolds, it will be interesting to see if the Matildas can draw on the inspiration they gained from their meeting with Freeman and create their own historic moments that will inspire future generations of Australian footballers.
