The Big Freeze 9: A day of hope and charity
The Big Freeze 9 is back to contribute to motor neurone disease awareness and raise funds to find a cure for the disease. The popular event will witness nine Australian household names take on the annual celebrity slide. The event will precede the Melbourne and Collingwood match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
What is the Big Freeze?
The Big Freeze was started by former Essendon player and Melbourne Demons coach Neale Daniher, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2013. The fundraiser aims to raise funds for research and support for people affected by the disease.
Motor neurone disease is a severe neurodegenerative disorder that leads to the slow degeneration of nerve cells controlling voluntary muscles. The disease slowly takes away a person’s ability to move, eat, swallow and speak.
The Ninth Edition of Big Freeze – Celebrity Participants
The Big Freeze 9 will witness nine celebrities slide into a pool of icy water in the MCG, grabbing everyone’s attention and reminding them of the devastating impact of motor neurone disease. This year’s participants include:
- Eric Bana
- Aaron Finch
- Abbey Gelmi
- Tayla Harris
- Mick Fanning
- Jason Dunstall
- Michelle Payne
- Tony Shaw
- Shaun Burgoyne
A Day of Hope and Charity
The Big Freeze Day is not just limited to a sporting event but is also an opportunity to honour and appreciate people fighting motor neurone disease. Daniher’s commitment to raising awareness and money for MND has created a massive impact. Since the event’s inception in 2014, it has raised $70 million towards research and to support people affected by the disease.
The event’s charity aspect encourages everyone to lend their support by donating towards the fight against motor neurone disease. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the cause has motivated the community to rise above these obstacles and work towards a common goal.
