Bob Barker, Beloved Television Host and Animal Rights Activist, Passes Away at 99
A Legend in the Television Industry
Bob Barker, the iconic television host of The Price Is Right, has died at the age of 99. Barker’s publicist, Roger Neal, confirmed that he passed away of natural causes in his Hollywood Hills home. Born in Darrington, Washington, Barker had a remarkable career in the television industry that spanned over 50 years, earning him 19 Daytime Emmy awards.
In addition to his long tenure on The Price is Right, Barker also hosted Truth or Consequences from 1956 to 1975 and the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants on CBS from 1967 to 1987. He became the longest-running host in pageant history, before quitting the Miss USA Pageant in 1987 due to his objections over the use of fur coats as prizes.
A Philosopher of Game Shows
Barker’s success as a television host can be attributed to his utterly natural charm and self-effacing people skills. He had a quick wit, but never crossed into cruelty. He was warm, but never became maudlin. Barker’s longevity can be seen as a testament to his ability to connect with audiences and make contestants feel like guests in his home.
In a 1996 interview, Barker spoke about his approach to hosting game shows, saying, “I want the contestants to feel as though they’re guests in my home… Perhaps my feeling of respect for them comes across to viewers, and that may be one of the reasons why I’ve lasted.”
A Fierce Advocate for Animal Rights
Aside from his television career, Bob Barker was also known for his dedication to the animal rights movement. In 1983, he teamed up with Nancy Burnet, president of the United Activists for Animal Rights, and together they fought against the use of fur in the entertainment industry. Barker’s activism included holding rallies in New York City and making significant donations to support the study of animal rights.
At the end of each episode of The Price Is Right, Barker would remind viewers to have their pets spayed or neutered, using his platform to promote responsible pet ownership and population control. He wanted to be remembered as the man who said those important words, showing his commitment to improving the lives of animals.
Remembering a Trailblazer
Upon hearing of Barker’s passing, Nancy Burnet expressed pride in the work they had done together, stating, “I am so proud of the trailblazing work Barker and I did together to expose the cruelty to animals in the entertainment industry and improve the plight of abused and exploited animals both in the United States and internationally. We were great friends over these 40 years. He will be missed.”
A Lasting Legacy
Bob Barker’s impact on the television industry cannot be overstated. His kind and charismatic presence on The Price Is Right brought joy to millions of viewers for over three decades. His advocacy for animal rights and dedication to promoting responsible pet ownership leaves a lasting legacy that extends beyond the realm of entertainment.
As we mourn his loss, we can take solace in the fact that Bob Barker’s contributions will continue to inspire and educate future generations. His compassion for animals and his genuine connection with audiences will forever be remembered.
