BYD’s new Dolphin undercuts the MG4 by $100 to become Australia’s cheapest EV
By Stephen Fenech | June 22, 2023
BYD, a leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has recently announced that its new Dolphin Dynamic will be the cheapest electric vehicle (EV) in Australia, undercutting the MG Motor MG4 by $100. The Dolphin Dynamic is set to hit the road before the end of 2023, and with its competitive pricing, BYD aims to make EVs more accessible to a wider range of Australians.
Earlier this week, MG Motor revealed the price of its MG4 51kW at $38,990 plus on-road costs. However, BYD has managed to offer the Dolphin Dynamic at an even lower price of $38,890 plus on-road costs. According to Luke Todd, CEO of EV Direct, “We are proud to introduce an EV of such high quality and safety that is now within reach for more Australians.” He also highlighted the potential for lower prices due to state government rebates, with Queensland offering rebates as high as $6,000, making the Dolphin Dynamic available for as low as $32,890 plus on-road costs. This pricing places the Dolphin Dynamic at a lower price point than some petrol-powered vehicles, which is a significant milestone in the EV market.
The Dolphin Dynamic: A Budget-Friendly EV with Impressive Features
The BYD Dolphin Dynamic is a 5-door hatchback with a spacious interior that can comfortably accommodate five adults and offer 345 litres of storage space. With the rear seats folded flat, the storage capacity increases to 1,310 litres. In terms of design, the Dolphin Dynamic boasts a sleek and modern aesthetic, staying true to BYD‘s design language.
Inside the Dolphin Dynamic, drivers will find a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that can be rotated to either landscape or portrait orientation. The system includes full connectivity options, such as Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Sat Nav, and wireless phone charging. Additionally, the vehicle features a large panoramic moonroof, voice control, and USB charging ports for both the front and rear passengers.
Comfort and convenience are prioritized in the Dolphin Dynamic, with features like heated seats, climate-controlled air conditioning, and BYD‘s advanced heat pump system for efficient thermal management to maximize driving range in all weather conditions.
Prioritizing Safety
Safety is a paramount concern for BYD, and the Dolphin Dynamic is equipped with various advanced safety features. These include seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), driver fatigue monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assistance. With these features, BYD aims to provide peace of mind for drivers and passengers alike.
Positive Reception and Future Plans
BYD opened expressions of interest for the Dolphin Dynamic on June 12 and has already received an exceptional response. Luke Todd expressed his optimism, stating, “We anticipate a substantial volume of pre-orders. Given BYD‘s proven supply chain capabilities, we eagerly look forward to delivering many thousands of Dolphins, with shipments scheduled to begin in Q4 2023.”
This development in the EV market is significant, as it represents a step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation sector in Australia. Lower prices and increased accessibility can encourage more people to consider switching to electric vehicles, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
Editorial: The Path to an Electric Future
As the cheapest electric vehicle in Australia, the BYD Dolphin Dynamic presents a promising opportunity for both consumers and the environment. With pricing on par with petrol-powered vehicles and government rebates, affordability is no longer a barrier to entry for those considering electric vehicles.
However, there are still challenges that lie ahead on the path to an electric future. One key concern is the availability and accessibility of charging infrastructure. As more Australians transition to electric vehicles, there needs to be a corresponding increase in charging stations to support the growing demand. Government and industry collaboration is crucial in ensuring that a comprehensive charging infrastructure is developed and maintained.
Another consideration is the sustainability of battery production and disposal. The production of electric vehicle batteries relies on finite resources, such as lithium and cobalt, which raises questions about the long-term environmental impact. Recycling programs and research into alternative battery technologies are necessary to address these concerns and minimize the ecological footprint of electric vehicles.
Ultimately, the transition to electric vehicles represents a significant opportunity for Australia to reduce its carbon emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change. However, it requires a coordinated effort from governments, manufacturers, and consumers to overcome the challenges and embrace the benefits of a renewable energy-powered future.
Advice for Prospective EV Buyers
For those considering purchasing an electric vehicle, it is essential to research and compare different models to find the best fit for individual needs and budget. Factors to consider include range, charging infrastructure, available government incentives, and overall cost of ownership.
Furthermore, it is advisable to take advantage of test-drive opportunities to experience the unique features and driving dynamics of electric vehicles. This firsthand experience can help determine if an electric vehicle is the right choice and address any concerns or reservations about transitioning from traditional petrol-powered vehicles.
Lastly, prospective buyers should explore the charging infrastructure in their area and consider the convenience and accessibility of charging stations. Planning for longer journeys, especially in regional areas, requires an understanding of the charging network and potential limitations. A reliable and widespread charging infrastructure is crucial for maximizing the practicality and convenience of owning an electric vehicle.
In conclusion, the BYD Dolphin Dynamic represents a significant milestone in making electric vehicles more affordable and accessible in Australia. Through continuous advancements and collaborative efforts, the transition to electric vehicles can contribute to a more sustainable future and promote renewable energy adoption on a wider scale.
