Ruthless Lions’ 81-pt ‘statement’; ‘everything goes wrong’ as Tigers ‘exposed’ in 7yr worst — 3-2-1
AFL commentator Ben Waterworth reports on the ruthless performance of the Brisbane Lions against a hapless Richmond, discussing the significance of the victory and the implications for both teams.
A ruthless Brisbane outfit has dismantled a hapless Richmond in its latest Gabba demolition, producing its biggest win of the season and handing the Tigers their greatest loss since their premiership era. The Lions improved their top two chances with a big percentage-boosting 81-point victory over the Tigers in which they play with an unrelenting attitude from the first bounce. Joe Daniher kicked five goals, while Lachie Neale starred with two goals from 34 touches in the 20.14 (134) to 7.11 (53) win. It was the Tigers’ biggest loss since Round 23, 2016.
The Lions set the tone with a blistering start, mauling the hapless Tigers in clearances and contested possessions. Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall said the Lions were “smashing them (the Tigers) everywhere”, while dual premiership Kangaroo David King lauded Brisbane’s toughness. “Brisbane have been awesome. They’ve made a big statement tonight,” King told Fox Footy.
‘BIG STATEMENT’ AS LIONS TURN FLAW INTO HUGE STRENGTH TO BOOST PERCENTAGE
Another game, another win for the Lions at the Gabba, which is quickly becoming the AFL’s toughest road trip. That’s now 46 wins from their past 54 games at the Gabba since 2019 for the Lions, who produced their biggest – and arguably most brutal – win of the season to date. The Lions set the tone with a blistering start, mauling the hapless Tigers in clearances and contested possessions.
The most impressive aspect about Brisbane’s performance was their forward-half pressure – and ability to convert Tigers turnovers into scores. Fourteen of Brisbane’s 19 goals were from intercepts. It was a percentage-boosting win for the Lions that could help them in their quest to finish inside the top two. With the way the season is shaping, a team needs every tiny advantage possible.
Next week, the Lions face 18th-placed West Coast. So if the Lions do manage to equal or better the percentage of one of Collingwood or Port Adelaide, it could be the difference between them finishing inside the top two or not. And we know how important a top-two finish would be for the Lions as it would give them significant home ground advantage.
‘EVERYTHING IS GOING WRONG’: TIGERS ‘EXPOSED’ AMID GREAT’S ‘HARSH’ CALL
The Tigers came into the match against Brisbane with renewed hope under interim coach Andrew McQualter after three wins from their past four games. But McQualter was handed his first hefty loss in charge as Richmond’s hopes of a late push for the finals took a hit. The Tigers went into half-time with just 1.7 (13) – their lowest half-time score against Brisbane since 1996.
Just as concerning for McQualter was his side’s lack of competitiveness at the coalface, down -13 in both contested possessions and clearances at the main break. That inevitably led to a significant territory and scoreboard advantage for Brisbane. Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall was alarmed at how easily the Lions were able to move the ball from their defensive half to the top of the forward 50 in the second quarter, which led to a Charlie Cameron goal. Adding to Richmond’s scoreboard pain was a concerning casualty ward. Dustin Martin was a late withdrawal due to illness, Jayden Short was subbed out with a hamstring injury that’s likely to sideline him for several weeks and Noah Cumberland struggled to cover the ground after picking up an ankle concern late on the half-time siren.
The Tigers will desperately want their key players back to improve their midfield display and make a late push for the finals.
‘DEJA VU’ AS LIONS STAR MAKES TIGERS PAY FOR LACK OF ‘RESPECT’
Brisbane Lions midfielder Lachie Neale had an exceptional performance against Richmond. It was the sixth time from his past 11 games against the Tigers that Neale had finished with 30-plus disposals. His contribution was vital in securing the Lions‘ dominance and ensuring the Tigers paid the price for underestimating him.
Since last year, the Lions are 14-2 when Neale has had nine clearances or more, highlighting his influential role on the team’s success. Neale’s performance against Richmond demonstrated his prowess in the midfield and his ability to turn the tide in Brisbane’s favor.
In conclusion, Brisbane Lions‘ resounding victory over Richmond was a clear statement of their strength and dominance in the competition. The Lions showcased their unrelenting attitude and ability to capitalize on turnovers, ultimately leading to their biggest win of the season. On the other hand, Richmond was exposed for their lacklustre performance and inability to compete in key areas of the game. The loss is a significant setback for the Tigers‘ aspirations of making a late push for the finals. The match also highlighted the impact of key players, with Lachie Neale’s exceptional performance playing a pivotal role in the Lions‘ triumph. The result has significant implications for the Lions‘ top-two chances and their pursuit of home ground advantage in the finals.
