Dua Lipa temporarily wins ‘Levitating’ copyright infringement lawsuit
A judge has temporarily dismissed the copyright infringement lawsuit filed against singer Dua Lipa for her hit track ‘Levitating’. Artikal Sound System, a Florida reggae band, had filed the lawsuit in March 2022, alleging that the hook of ‘Levitating’ was copied from their 2017 track ‘Live Your Life’. However, they did not provide explicit evidence to back up their accusation.
Judge Sykes’ Ruling
US District Judge Sunshine Sykes ruled in favour of Dua Lipa stating that Artikal Sound System was unable to substantiate their claim. In their lawsuit, the reggae band had presented a theory that one of Dua Lipa’s co-writers had worked with someone in the past who was taught the guitar by a brother-in-law of one of the band’s members. However, Judge Sykes dismissed it, stating that the links presented were attenuated and bore little connection to the musical compositions in question.
Despite the ruling, Judge Sykes is giving Artikal Sound System an opportunity to refile their complaint until June 16, provided they are able to present substantial evidence supporting their accusations.
Dua Lipa’s Criticism of the British Government
Dua Lipa recently criticised the British government’s approach towards migrants, calling it “small-minded and shortsighted”. In response to home secretary Suella Braverman singling out “Albanian criminals” and claiming that England was facing an “invasion” of migrants crossing the Channel by small boats, Lipa made a statement saying that immigrants who come to the UK work hard to earn their living here and deserve empathy from the government and people.
