Push for Chinese Australians to Embrace Footy with a China-Themed Match

As Australian Football League (AFL) games struggle to gain traction in China, the Sydney Swans are hoping to bring China to the game by hosting a China-themed match against the West Coast Eagles. The match scheduled for later this month will be attended by high-ranking Chinese and Australian diplomatic figures and celebrated at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in honor of the Chinese community’s involvement in sports. The event’s centerpiece will be a dragon dance performance on the field, which is aimed at promoting the sport among the Australian-Chinese population.

Initiatives to Promote Footy in the Chinese Community

Despite Australia’s rich history of immigration from China and East Asia, the AFL has seen relatively few people from that part of the world involved in the sport as players, coaches, or administrators. However, over the years, there have been a few initiatives to promote the sport among the Chinese population.

In 2017-2019, Port Adelaide played three games for premiership points against St Kilda and Gold Coast in Shanghai. In contrast, the upcoming match sees the Swans host a themed game in Sydney to draw in as many Chinese-Australian audiences as possible. Nearly 11.6% of Sydney’s population identified as having Chinese ancestry in the 2021 census, indicating a significant potential audience for the game.

The Swans are optimistic that the match will help to grow Australian rules football in the Chinese community. The club chairman, Andrew Pridham, expressed his desire to showcase the game to as many Chinese heritage people as possible and welcome them to the club. Additionally, 2500 tickets have been distributed among international students through Universities Australia for them to get a chance to attend the game live and enjoy the sport.

Themed games to support sections of the community

The China-themed match is part of the Swans‘ broader community engagement strategy, which also includes the Marn Grook game celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture, and the yearly Pride Game with St Kilda. Themed games specific to supporting sections of the community are core to this strategy.

Richard Colless, the long-serving former Swans chairman and mastermind behind the China-themed match, hopes that it will help create a higher degree of engagement between the Chinese community and the broader Australian population. He aspires to grow the game in Sydney’s Chinese community and sees the match as a stepping stone towards that goal.

Philosophical Discussion

The China-themed match is one of many events aiming to bridge the cultural gaps among different groups within Australia. Promoting sports is an excellent way to bring together communities with different cultural values and interests. The sporting event will also encourage inclusivity and galvanize the Chinese community, paving the way for future generations to pursue their passions and embrace the sport.

Editorial and Advice

Australia prides itself on being a multicultural and inclusive nation. Therefore, events like China-themed matches and other community-specific initiatives should be embraced by all. It is essential to recognize the contribution of various immigrant groups to Australian society and for that recognition to extend to the different sports that Aussies love. We should celebrate diversity, and one way to do that is to create games that represent different parts of our rich cultural fabric.
