Veteran Congress Leader Oommen Chandy Passes Away
An End of an Era in Kerala Politics

He went on to become the president of the KSU from 1967 to 1969, and later, the president of the State Youth Congress in 1970.

His remarkable feat of being elected consecutively 12 times from the same constituency speaks volumes about the trust and faith the people of Puthuppally had in him. This unwavering support from his constituents propelled him to become the Chief Minister of Kerala twice, from 2004 to 2006 and from 2011 to 2016. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition from 2006 to 2011.

Throughout his political career, Oommen Chandy held various ministerial positions. He served as the Minister for Labour in the first Karunakaran Cabinet and the first Antony Cabinet. In the second Karunakaran Cabinet, he had the responsibility of the home department. He also held the position of the Finance Minister from 1991 to 1994 in the fourth Karunakaran Cabinet.
Oommen Chandy’s legacy as the longest-serving member of the Kerala Assembly is unparalleled. He accumulated a total of 2,459 days as Chief Minister, which places him in the fourth position among the longest-serving Chief Ministers in the history of Kerala.
