Campus Bear Spectrum Joins the Leeds Bear Hunt

Date: 6 July 2023

We have an exciting visitor here at the University of Leeds this summer – Spectrum the bear! Spectrum is a part of the Leeds Bear Hunt art trail, an event that aims to raise money for the Leeds Children’s Hospital. The art trail features 35 magnificent bear sculptures and 50 bear cub pieces of art spread across the city of Leeds and its surrounding parks. Visitors are invited to embark on a journey to discover all the statues inspired by children’s author Michael Rosen’s book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.

The Leeds Bear Hunt is not only a fun and engaging activity for families but also a great opportunity to support a worthy cause. The funds raised through this event will go towards providing the best possible care to critically ill babies, children, and young people at Leeds Children’s Hospital. It is an important endeavor that aims to tackle health inequalities and transform healthcare for children in the region.

A Symbol of Diversity and Inclusivity

Amidst the vibrant collection of bear sculptures, the University of Leeds proudly showcases its very own bear, Spectrum. Decorated by local illustrator Christine Jopling, Spectrum stands out with its rainbow-colored design, symbolizing the diversity and inclusivity of the Leeds community. It is also a tribute to the National Health Service (NHS), expressing gratitude for their tireless efforts.

Professor Nick Plant, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation at Leeds, emphasizes the significance of the Leeds Bear Hunt in supporting the Leeds Children’s Hospital and addressing health inequalities. He expresses pride in the strong partnership between the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This collaboration ensures that the best health and care outcomes are delivered to every child in the region.

Engaging the Community and Showcasing Talent

The Leeds Bear Hunt provides an exciting platform for both local and national artists, as well as members of the community, to display their creativity. Each bear sculpture reflects the unique artistic vision and style of its creator. The event not only raises funds but also brings the community together through art and raises awareness for the cause.

Dr. Alexa Ruppertsberg, Head of Public Engagement with Research at Leeds, encourages visitors to explore the University of Leeds campus and experience various free and accessible activities such as galleries, exhibitions, and beautiful gardens. This fosters engagement and curiosity among the public, creating a broader understanding of the university’s contributions to society.

A Collaborative Effort for a Greater Cause

Joanna Parker, PR and Digital Executive at Leeds Hospitals Charity, expresses the significance of the collaboration between the University of Leeds and Leeds Children’s Hospital. The Be Curious team, already involved in research at the hospital, sees this partnership as a natural fit. The Leeds Bear Hunt not only raises funds but also brings awareness to the Be Curious initiative, promoting engagement and support for those in the community who need it most.

The Leeds Bear Hunt is a testament to the power of art, community collaboration, and philanthropy. By venturing on this exciting bear hunt, the people of Leeds have the opportunity to enjoy the talents of artists, contribute to a worthy cause, and raise awareness for the importance of providing quality healthcare to every child.
