Carlton Legend Ed Curnow Announces Retirement
End of an Era for Ed Curnow
After 14 seasons and 221 games, Carlton Football Club veteran Ed Curnow has made the difficult decision to retire at the end of the club’s 2023 AFL finals campaign. Curnow’s impressive AFL journey began when he was recruited by Adelaide through the 2008 rookie draft. However, it was at Carlton where he truly found his place, joining the club as a rookie at the end of 2010.
Throughout his career, Curnow has been known for his unwavering dedication, hard work, and determination. He quickly endeared himself to the Carlton faithful and became a key figure in the Navy Blue hearts. In his debut season at the club, he was awarded the Best Clubman Award, a feat he repeated in 2016 and 2019. In 2015, he also received the Spirit of Carlton Award, recognizing his embodiment of the club’s values both on and off the field.
Curnow’s on-field performances were equally remarkable. He achieved three consecutive podium finishes in the prestigious John Nicholls Medal from 2018 to 2020, a feat only previously accomplished by Carlton legend Chris Judd. In his 11th season with the club, Curnow finished first in goal assists and inside 50s and third in contested possessions, clearances, and tackles. His contributions to the team’s success and his impact on the playing group were further evidenced by his inclusion in the Blues’ leadership group from 2016 to 2021.

Throughout his career, Curnow has consistently shown his durability and resilience. At the end of the 2022 season, he was offered a one-year contract extension, making him the most senior player on the Blues’ list. His contributions to the club will leave a lasting legacy within the four walls of IKON Park.
A Heartfelt Farewell
Reflecting on his time at Carlton, Curnow expressed his gratitude to all the people who have supported him throughout his career. He emphasized the impact that the club, his teammates, the wider club and fanbase, and his family have had on his journey.
Curnow also highlighted the privilege it has been to play alongside his brother Charlie, who has also had a successful career at Carlton. The Curnow brothers made history as the first siblings to each play 100 games in Navy Blue.
A Legacy of Leadership
Senior Coach Michael Voss praised Curnow’s contributions to the club, both on and off the field. He described Curnow as a clubman who gives his all in every game and has played a vital role in the development of the playing group.
“Footy clubs are built around good people like Ed Curnow,” Voss said. “He’s highly regarded within these four walls and has held a special place in Carlton hearts for over a decade. The club will forever be a better place for having Ed Curnow as an integral part of it.”
