Rugby League Star Opens Up About Harrowing Health Battle

September 11th, 2023

Former Broncos and Cowboys star Carl Webb has bravely shared his personal journey battling Motor Neurone Disease (MND). In an interview with Yvonne Sampson on Fox League’s Face-to-Face, Webb discussed the challenges he faced after being diagnosed with this rare disorder in 2020.

MND is a degenerative condition that affects the nervous system and weakens the muscles. Symptoms can include slurred speech, muscle twitching, and difficulties with swallowing. Webb admitted that when he received the diagnosis, he had to resort to googling what MND actually was.

Webb, known for his strength and physicality on the field, sought medical attention after struggling with menial tasks such as buttoning up his shirt or holding a dinner plate. His physical deterioration was a stark contrast to the athleticism he had displayed throughout his rugby league career.

A Confronting Reality

The reality sank in for Webb when he walked out of the specialist’s office and learned more about MND through his own research. He described the moment as being hit with a “baseball bat to the head.” The following days were a blur as he assimilated the devastating news.

Despite the initial shock and confusion, Webb eventually accepted his diagnosis and began to educate himself about the disease. He spoke about the importance of mental strength in facing this “systematic killer.” Webb emphasized the value of being aware of the progression of the disease, particularly as it gradually moved from the top half of his body to his legs.

There is currently no known cure for MND, which affects over 2000 people in Australia alone, with two new cases diagnosed every day. The seriousness of the disease prompted Webb to open up about his battle, raising awareness about MND and its impact on individuals and their families.

A Life with No Regrets

When asked if he had any regrets, the former NRL player, who had a decorated career spanning 12 seasons and 15 Origins for Queensland, spoke candidly about his outlook on life. Webb expressed that despite other regrets he may have, he wouldn’t change a thing about his rugby league journey.

He acknowledged that his life after football had been fulfilling, with wonderful children and experiences that he wouldn’t have had if he hadn’t pursued his career in the sport. Webb described his journey as a “really good ride” and while acknowledging the bitter pill of his current situation, he remains content with the choices he made.

Moving Forward

Webb’s bravery and resilience in the face of this devastating disease should be commended. His willingness to share his personal experience will undoubtedly raise awareness about MND and inspire others facing similar challenges.

As a society, it is crucial that we continue to support research and fund initiatives to find a cure for MND. Additionally, we must ensure that adequate support and resources are available for individuals and families impacted by this debilitating condition.

Carl Webb’s story serves as a powerful reminder to cherish our health and make the most of our opportunities. It is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
