The Debut of Major League Cricket

On July 13, 2023, Major League Cricket (MLC) made its historic debut in North Texas, with the Texas Super Kings hosting the Los Angeles Knight Riders in the opening match of a 19-match tournament. While cricket is wildly popular in many parts of the world, it has never managed to gain significant traction in the United States. Zubin Surkari, who is managing operations for Major League Cricket, expressed his optimism about the new league, stating, “It’s a new beginning for cricket in this country.” With the format of T20 cricket, where matches are completed in a more condensed three-hour timeframe, MLC aims to provide an exciting sporting experience that is easily accessible to American audiences.

The newly transformed 7,200-seat Grand Prairie Stadium near Dallas serves as the venue for the debut matches. The tournament will then move to Church Street Park in Morrisville, N.C., near Raleigh and Durham for the next seven matches before returning to Grand Prairie for the playoffs. With six teams, including prominent international cricket stars, such as Andre Russell from the Kolkata Knight Riders, MI New York, the San Francisco Unicorns, Seattle Orcas, and Washington Freedom, MLC seeks to create a high-quality cricketing experience for fans and players alike.
