Rajinikanth’s “Jailer“: A Commendable Comeback for the Iconic Actor

The Dignity and Impressiveness of Rajinikanth

In Rajinikanth’s first film, “Apoorva Raagangal” in 1975, a line from a review described him as “dignified and impressive.” Now, almost 50 years later, Rajinikanth has managed to maintain not only that dignity and impressiveness but also a seasoned charisma that has endeared him to his fans. This charisma is evident in his latest collaboration with filmmaker Nelson in the film “Jailer.”

In “Jailer,” Rajinikanth plays the character of Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer who spends his time helping shoot videos for his grandson’s YouTube channel. However, when his son, a conscientious cop, gets involved in an idol smuggling racket, trouble comes knocking on Muthu’s door. Blaming his own honest ways for his son’s predicament, Muthu steps back into a world he had taken a break from voluntarily.

Nelson‘s Quirky Touches and Engrossing Storytelling

Director Nelson has a knack for infusing his films with fantastic visuals, wacky humor, and deadpan-faced lead characters. “Jailer” is no exception. Nelson‘s previous films have featured simple plots enhanced by the director’s nifty ideas, and “Jailer” follows suit. While the film might remind senior audiences of the 1974 film “Thangappathakkam,” it will also resonate with younger viewers who enjoyed Kamal Haasan’s recent hit “Vikram.”

One of the strengths of “Jailer” is its racy screenplay. From the start, the film jumps straight into the action and maintains a fast pace until intermission. However, the second half falters slightly in consistency. Although cameos from Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar are excellent additions, the introduction of other characters in the latter half of the film falls short. Nelson has had difficulty writing strong female characters in his previous films, and this remains unchanged in “Jailer.” The much-anticipated reunion between Rajinikanth and Ramya Krishnan from “Padayappa” is not as sensational as fans hoped, and the character of Varma, played by Vinayakan, falls short as a formidable opponent for Muthu.

Nelson‘s Homage to Breaking Bad and Rajinikanth’s Legacy

Nelson‘s love for the series “Breaking Bad” is evident in his previous films, and “Jailer” is no exception. Muthu’s character shares similarities with the fan-favorite character Mike Ehrmantraut, and Varma’s underground den resembles the super lab from the series. The film also pays homage to Rajinikanth’s iconic moments from his past films, with plenty of Easter eggs for fans to spot. The inclusion of these references not only gratifies fans but also serves as a nostalgic throwback to the magical moments of cinema that many of us grew up watching.

Add to that some decent action sequences, accompanied by Anirudh’s impactful score and beautifully shot by Vijay Kartik Kannan, and “Jailer” becomes an engaging experience. While Rajinikanth’s last two films, “Annaatthe” and “Darbar,” were underwhelming, “Jailer” marks a commendable comeback for both the actor and filmmaker.

Conclusion: A Return to Form for Rajinikanth and Nelson

Jailer” may not be perfect, but with Rajinikanth’s towering presence and Nelson‘s fortification of writing, it is a film that deserves recognition. The veteran actor proves once again why he is an icon in the industry, while Nelson showcases his unique sense of humor and fan service. Although the film falters in certain aspects, it is an enjoyable entertainer that speaks to the enduring appeal of the Rajinikanth brand. As “Jailer” continues to run in theatres, audiences can delight in the triumphant comeback of Rajinikanth and the creative prowess of Nelson.
