Anger Politics in the Age of Trump
Introduction
The United States has always had its fair share of political strife and discord. However, with the advent of social media and the presidency of Donald Trump, political anger and polarization seem to have taken on a new level. The recently passed presidential elections, once again, brought to the surface the deep divides that exist within American society. Yet, despite the electoral victory of Joe Biden, anger, and legal issues seem to continue to confound American politics.
The Role of Social Media
In the 21st century, social media has become the catalyst of the spread of anger politics. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter have enabled the rapid dissemination of information and commentary around social, economic, and political issues. However, it has also led to a situation in which different sets of people tend to engage with only their preferred echo chambers. The result is a situation where anyone who does not fit the mold of mainstream opinion is ostracized, antagonized, and demonized.
The Trump Effect
Donald Trump will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most polarizing presidents in American history. From the get-go, his divisive rhetoric and his penchant for playing to the anger of his base whipped up a sense of indignation and animosity among his critics. Trump‘s love for social media enabled him to amplify his message with ease and reach his followers directly. Even after being charged with multiple legal issues, he refused to concede to his defeat, thus deepening polarization in the US.
The Way Forward
The recent acquittal of Donald Trump, who was charged with inciting an insurrection, has further polarized American politics. With Trump now hinting that he might attempt to re-enter politics, this environment of anger and division is only going to exacerbate further. However, the Biden administration seems to have begun to prioritize a more moderate approach to governance. It remains to be seen whether this will be enough to quell the anger that has plagued American society in recent years.
Conclusion
America’s political environment has always been one of passionate fervor, but this current moment of anger politics seems to be particularly combative. Social media and Donald Trump have added fuel to the fire, and the results have been deeply polarizing. As Americans and global citizens, we need to find ways to reintegrate into civil society and start discussions, which can help bridge the gaps that currently exist. Ultimately, the way forward lies not in more division, but in more healing and reconciliation.
