What Will Happen If IND vs SL Asia Cup 2023 Final is Washed Out?

The Possibility of Rain Interruptions

The Asia Cup 2023 final between India and Sri Lanka, scheduled to take place at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo today, is at risk of being washed out due to rain. Matches in the Asia Cup have historically been consistently interrupted by rain, and the final is not expected to be an exception, with thundershowers forecasted throughout the day.

Reserve Day and Potential Scenarios

Fortunately, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has allocated a reserve day for the Asia Cup final, which means that if rain interrupts the match today, it will resume tomorrow, September 18.

If the match is curtailed by rain, we can expect an “x-overs-per-side” match, where the number of overs per side will be decided based on the amount of play possible. This will ensure a proper contest and determine a clear winner. However, if the x-overs-per-side match is also interrupted by rain, the number of overs will be further reduced until a 20-overs per side game is possible. In this case, we can still expect a shorter, yet decisive, match.

If the x-overs-per-side match is interrupted after the first innings, the overs will continue to be reduced, and a Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) target will be set for the chasing team, ensuring a fair and competitive game. Additionally, if less than 20 overs are bowled on Sunday, the match will be moved to the reserve day and continue from the point where it had stopped.

However, if rain still threatens the match on the reserve day, and the entire day’s play is in danger of being washed out, the match will be eventually called off, resulting in both India and Sri Lanka sharing the Asia Cup 2023 trophy.

Implications for Asia Cup 2023 Champions

If the match is cancelled due to rain, both India and Sri Lanka will have the opportunity to claim the title. However, in terms of historical records, it is important to note that India currently leads the Asia Cup winners’ list with 7 titles. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has won the tournament 6 times. If Sri Lanka were to win the Asia Cup 2023, they would equal India’s record, each having 7 cup wins.

Opinion

Fans of cricket will undoubtedly be eagerly hoping for the rain to stay away and for a full and uninterrupted match between these two powerhouses of the sport. However, even if the final is washed out, it would not be the first time that India and Sri Lanka share a trophy in a major cricketing event. The ICC Champions Trophy 2002 final between the two teams was also affected by rain and ultimately had to be shared.

Overall, the outcome of the Asia Cup 2023 final will depend on the weather conditions and the ability to complete a fair and competitive match. The reserve day provides some flexibility, but ultimately, the unpredictability of nature reminds us of the inherent vulnerability in outdoor sports. Nevertheless, cricket fans can hope for a memorable and decisive final, where the best team emerges as the champions.
