Former Smash Mouth Lead Singer Steve Harwell Dies at 56
September 5, 2023
In a sad turn of events, Steve Harwell, the former lead singer of the iconic rock group Smash Mouth, has passed away at the age of 56, according to his manager, Robert Hayes. While the cause of death has not been revealed, it is known that Harwell had been under hospice care over the weekend. He died at his home in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by his loved ones.
A Tribute to a True American Original
Hayes spoke fondly of Harwell’s larger-than-life personality and his unwavering determination to reach the heights of pop stardom. In a statement to CNN, he said, “Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle.” Harwell’s achievements in the music industry are noteworthy, especially considering his limited musical experience. With only his charm, charisma, ambition, and courage, he soared to success.
A Career with Smash Mouth
Steve Harwell was a founding member and the long-time lead singer of Smash Mouth, a band that gained popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They are best known for their chart-topping singles “All Star” and “I’m a Believer,” which achieved cult status after featuring in the soundtrack of the animated film “Shrek” released in 2001.
Throughout his career, the band received critical acclaim and recognition, including a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group for their hit song “All Star.” Their energetic performances and catchy tunes resonated with fans, securing their place in the music industry.
A Man of Uncommon Approaches
Harwell’s determination to succeed was evident in his unorthodox methods. He personally took Smash Mouth’s album “Astro Lounge” to radio stations all over the country to ensure its airplay, going through the back door or an open window to get their music heard. In a 1999 interview, he stated, “We never do anything traditional… It’s always the back door, or an open window or something, to get our stuff played.”
Harwell’s passion for performing and connecting with fans was unwavering, even as the band’s success grew. In a 2014 interview, he expressed his appreciation for their best-known hits, stating, “There’s always somebody in the crowd who hasn’t heard it. Or hasn’t seen it live. When I go out onstage, I look at it that way. Once that classic song starts, people just go bananas.”
Legacy and Moving Forward
Smash Mouth continued to perform after Harwell left the band in 2021 due to health issues, enlisting new lead vocalist Zach Goode to carry on their music. However, Harwell’s impact on the music industry and the band’s history remains embedded in the minds and hearts of fans.
A Life Well Lived
Robert Hayes beautifully summarized Harwell’s life as a “100 percent full-throttle life.” Harwell’s journey was one of aiming for the stars and magically hitting his target. His legacy will be remembered for his contribution to the music industry and Smash Mouth’s timeless hits.
As we say our final farewell to Steve Harwell, let us cherish the music he shared with the world and remember the joy he brought to countless fans. May he rest in peace, knowing he reached for the stars and left a lasting impact on the music industry.
