Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll: Metal Heavyweights Prove Good Music Never Dies
A Testament to Timeless Music
The world of rock and roll has long been associated with fast living, excessive partying, and a rebellious spirit. Bands like Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe, iconic heavy metal giants from the ’80s, embody this image. However, despite the stereotypes, these two bands are living proof that good music stands the test of time. With both groups celebrating over 40 years in the industry, they are embarking on an epic joint tour that is redefining rock and roll.
Different Paths, Same Love for Music
While both Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe share a passion for heavy music, their journeys and approaches to the rock and roll lifestyle couldn’t be more different. In their prime, Mötley Crüe embraced every outlandish stereotype, both on and off stage. Their shows featured fire, chainsaws, and a heedless disregard for convention. Bassist and songwriter Nikki Sixx reminisced about their early years, saying, “Vince would light me on fire, we had chainsaws on stage…who knew we’d be here 42 years later?” But behind the shock value, they were simply doing what they loved.
A Lifestyle of Excess
Mötley Crüe’s notorious reputation earned them headlines for their wild partying, drug abuse, and run-ins with the law. They became infamous for issues like heroin overdoses and arrests, and even faced a reported ban from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their drummer, Tommy Lee, was known for his over-the-top antics, including a publicized marriage to actress Pamela Anderson. However, when asked if they miss the chaos of that era, Def Leppard’s lead guitarist Phil Collen had a different perspective. He rejected the notion that self-indulgence is a prerequisite for quality rock and roll, stating, “I think there’s a big cop-out, especially in rock and roll, that ‘Hey, yeah man, it’s loose.’ That’s an excuse for being lazy and crap, you know? So we don’t do that.”
The Dark Side of the Rock Star Lifestyle
Collen’s reflection on the dangers of the rock and roll lifestyle comes from personal experience. He gave up alcohol nearly 40 years ago after the tragic death of Def Leppard’s guitarist and songwriter Steve Clark, who succumbed to an accidental overdose. Collen referred to Clark as his best mate and explained that their partying habits were so notorious that they were known as the “terror twins.” However, the loss of his friend and his own downward spiral made Collen realize the destructive nature of their actions.
Evolving in a Changing Music Scene
When asked if Mötley Crüe would thrive in the current music scene, the band members unanimously agreed that they would likely face cancellation. The evolution of society and its sensibilities have made some aspects of their past antics incompatible with the present. Nevertheless, both Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe continue to release new music and embark on a world tour together, demonstrating that their love for music transcends the need for excessive partying.
The Enduring Spirit of Rock and Roll
As we enter 2023, Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe prove that retirement is not on their radar. Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliot confidently states, “We enjoy doing what we do. We always have, long may it last.” This sentiment is echoed by Mötley Crüe, who are proudly raising their middle fingers to the world, declaring that they are in the “we don’t give a f— phase” of their careers. Their upcoming tour in Australia is evidence that rock and roll will continue to thrive, even without the excesses of the past.
Finding Balance in Rock and Roll
While the image of sex, drugs, and rock and roll remains ingrained in the collective consciousness, it is essential to separate the mythology from the reality. The stories of Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, and many other bands highlight the destructive consequences of unrestrained hedonism. As fans, we can appreciate their music while acknowledging the toll it can take on the artists themselves.
Advice for Aspiring Artists
For aspiring musicians, it is crucial to remember that fame and success come with responsibilities. The allure of the rock and roll lifestyle may be appealing, but it is essential to find a balance between passion and self-destructive behavior. Creating great music requires dedication, discipline, and a respect for oneself and others. As we celebrate the enduring music of bands like Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe, let their stories serve as a lesson on the fine line between artistic freedom and personal well-being.
