For Duffy and Monahan, the transition from their amateur backgrounds to the professional world of AFL has been quite surreal. “To see the coaches, the ground, everything – it’s very professional, coming from an amateur background,” Monahan commented.

They are particularly looking forward to experiencing a packed MCG atmosphere while supporting their new team against Sydney. “Carlton’s one of the biggest clubs with the joint most premierships, so we’re excited to be coming to such a big team. There are good things ahead,” Monahan stated.

Before their journey to Australia, Duffy and Monahan sought advice from others who have made a successful transition from Ireland to AFL. They reached out to Ciaran Byrne, who played for the Adelaide Crows, to gain insights into the Australian game. Duffy also mentioned their contact with Byrne’s good friend, Carlton captain Patrick Cripps, in the hopes of building a rapport with the rest of the team.

“He was obviously good friends with Patrick Cripps as well, so hopefully he’s got a soft spot for the Irish lads!” Duffy shared.
