Duffy and Monahan: Irish Recruits Set to Shine at IKON Park

In the past few weeks, excitement has been buzzing around the arrival of Irish recruits Matt Duffy and Rob Monahan at Carlton Football Club in Melbourne. The two newcomers wasted no time in immersing themselves in their new surroundings, kicking the footy at IKON Park shortly after landing and meeting their new teammates. Their trip down under promises many exciting adventures, with the highlight being their attendance at Carlton’s elimination final against Sydney at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) next Friday night.

Professionalism and Adaptation

For Duffy and Monahan, the transition from their amateur backgrounds to the professional world of AFL has been quite surreal. Coming from Ireland, where Gaelic football is the dominant sport, they were thrilled to witness the high level of professionalism at Carlton. From the coaches to the facilities, everything impressed the duo.

“To see the coaches, the ground, everything – it’s very professional, coming from an amateur background,” Monahan commented.

Exploring Melbourne and Carlton Culture

Aside from their football commitments, Duffy and Monahan are excited to explore Melbourne and immerse themselves in the city’s culture. They are particularly looking forward to experiencing a packed MCG atmosphere while supporting their new team against Sydney. Their eagerness to embrace the Carlton family and the club’s rich history is evident.

“Carlton’s one of the biggest clubs with the joint most premierships, so we’re excited to be coming to such a big team. There are good things ahead,” Monahan stated.

Seeking Guidance and Support

Before their journey to Australia, Duffy and Monahan sought advice from others who have made a successful transition from Ireland to AFL. They reached out to Ciaran Byrne, who played for the Adelaide Crows, to gain insights into the Australian game. Duffy also mentioned their contact with Byrne’s good friend, Carlton captain Patrick Cripps, in the hopes of building a rapport with the rest of the team.

“He was obviously good friends with Patrick Cripps as well, so hopefully he’s got a soft spot for the Irish lads!” Duffy shared.

Welcoming the Irish Recruits

As the Carlton family eagerly anticipates the arrival of Duffy and Monahan, the club is ready to embrace them wholeheartedly. Supporters, the AFLW team, and the AFL team will come together at IKON Park in a grand event to welcome the newcomers. Duffy and Monahan expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received, including messages on social media, which have made their transition easier.

“There’s so much support, and [social media messages] make it that much easier, knowing they’re happy to have you here. It’s just great,” Monahan enthused.

The journey of Matt Duffy and Rob Monahan at Carlton Football Club has just begun. As they navigate their way through the world of AFL, their passion, determination, and the warm welcome they have received from the Carlton family will undoubtedly pave the way for success on and off the field.
