State Showdown: Where to Catch the Colorado vs. Colorado State Face-Off

The Rocky Mountain Showdown Returns: Colorado vs. Colorado State

The highly anticipated Rocky Mountain Showdown between No. 18 Colorado and in-state rival Colorado State is set to take place on Saturday in Week 3 of college football. This game marks the first meeting between the two teams since 2019, despite their close proximity. Both schools are located within an hour’s drive of each other. The rivalry matchup will also be the first on-campus battle between the two since 2009, as they have played their previous 10 games at Denver’s Empower Field at Mile High.

A Dominant Streak for the Buffaloes

Colorado enters the game with a five-game winning streak against Colorado State dating back to 2015. The Buffaloes have won each game in that span by a margin of at least 14 points, outscoring the Rams 158-54. In fact, Colorado has historically dominated the series, holding a 67-22-2 all-time record against their in-state rivals.

First-Year Coach Deion Sanders Making an Impact

Colorado, under the leadership of first-year coach Deion Sanders, has had a strong start to the season with wins against TCU and Nebraska in the first two weeks. This is the first time in 30 years that the Buffaloes have opened the season with two Power Five wins, excluding the all-Pac-12 schedule during the COVID-19 campaign in 2020.

Shedeur Sanders Leading the Charge

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders has been a standout player for Colorado, throwing for at least 350 yards and three touchdowns in consecutive games. He is the first Buffaloes quarterback since Koy Detmer to achieve this feat. Sanders is expected to have another strong performance against Colorado State, considering the Rams allowed Washington State’s quarterback to throw for 451 yards and three touchdowns in their season opener.

A Long Struggle Against Ranked Teams

Colorado State has faced difficulties when playing against ranked opponents, with their last win against a ranked team dating back to 2002 when they defeated No. 6 Colorado early in the season. Since then, the Rams have gone 0-24 against top-25 opponents. However, their record improves when facing teams ranked outside the top 10, as they have won 4 out of 7 such matchups since 1993.

A Tune-Up Before Challenging Conference Play

Colorado‘s schedule leading up to the Colorado State game has been challenging, with wins against TCU and Nebraska. Therefore, this matchup against the Rams provides the Buffaloes with an opportunity to fine-tune their performance before facing No. 13 Oregon and No. 5 USC in the upcoming weeks. The game against Colorado State should allow Colorado to address any remaining issues and prepare for the tough conference schedule ahead.
