Richmond Tigers Survive Late Charge by Fremantle Dockers
Last Saturday, the Richmond Tigers faced off against the Fremantle Dockers in inclement conditions at Optus Stadium. It was a game filled with intense momentum swings that eventually saw the Tigers hold on for a 15-point victory, prevailing 12.13 (70) to 10.10 (70).
The Game Recap
The Dockers kicked off the game with the opening goal before the Tigers turned the momentum with the next five goals to open up a lead it would hold for the remainder of the game. Tim Taranto, Shai Bolton and skipper Toby Nankervis performed exceptionally well on the field, with Taranto racking up 35 touches, seven tackles, seven clearances and six score involvements for the game. Bolton had a standout final quarter with 14 disposals and the game-winning goal, bringing the Tigers closer to the top eight and among the chasing pack.
Tigers “Beast” Proves His Worth
The performances of Tim Taranto and Shai Bolton were a standout highlight of the game. Commenting on Taranto’s outstanding game, Fox Footy’s Cameron Mooney said: “This kid, not only is he going to be their (Richmond’s) best and fairest by a streak, he’s All Australian talk. He’s having an unbelievable year.” AFL great Dermott Brereton described Taranto as a “beast” on the footy field. Meanwhile, Bolton played a blinder, particularly with his 14-disposal final quarter, ending with 33 disposals, 16 contested possessions and 11 inside 50s.
Huge Hit “Irons Out” Freo Gun
Another significant event during the game was the massive hit on Docker James Aish early in the final term at Optus Stadium. Rhyan Mansell looks set for a nervous Match Review wait after the hit floored Aish. The impact was so severe Aish’s headband went flying across the turf. Mansell appeared to make shoulder-to-shoulder contact, prompting commentators to question why the free kick was given, especially given the heavily favoured Freo free kick count. However, it is for the Match Review Officer to decide Mansell’s fate separately from the free kick given.
Freo’s Forwards Fail to Fire…Until Michael Walters Spark Arrives
The Dockers had to shuffle their attack with Luke Jackson heading into the ruck without injured teammate Sean Darcy. But without Jackson in attack, and with rookies Jye Amiss and Josh Treacy carrying the bulk of the load, Fremantle could not fire in the first half, scoring only four goals to the main break. However, Michael Walters’ introduction as a late tactical substitution added some verve and momentum to a dull attacking end as Fremantle closed from 36 points down in the third term to close to just 19 points at the final change. However, the task was too great for the home side, who ended up 15-point losers.
Conclusion and Advice
The game between the Tigers and the Dockers was a close and hard-fought contest, with momentum swings throughout. The Tigers proved themselves to be the stronger team, with their star players putting in an exceptional performance. In contrast, the Dockers struggled to get their forwards firing early on and only rallied when a tactical substitution breathed some life into their game. Their comeback was still not enough to win the match, but it serves as a reminder that tactical decisions can make a major difference on the field.
Overall, it is a lesson in determination and perseverance. Both the Tigers and the Dockers fought hard until the final whistle. The Dockers may not have won the game, but they have shown that they can stand toe-to-toe against top-tier teams like the Tigers. As for the Tigers, their performance is a testament to their skill and teamwork, and they have once again demonstrated why they are a force to be reckoned with in the AFL.
