By Holly Thompson | August 8, 2023 — 12.40pm
West Coast Eagles captain Luke Shuey has made the difficult decision to retire at the end of the AFL 2023 season, following in the footsteps of former captain Shannon Hurn. Shuey, who has been an integral part of the team for the past 15 years, cited ongoing hamstring injuries as the reason for his retirement.
A Lasting Legacy
Throughout his illustrious career, Shuey has made a name for himself as a big game star and a leader on and off the field. His standout performance in the 2018 grand final, where he was awarded the Norm Smith medal, will forever be remembered as one of the best individual performances in AFL history.
Shuey’s retirement marks the end of an era for the West Coast Eagles, as they bid farewell to a player who has given his heart and soul to the club. With close to 250 games under his belt, Shuey has left an indelible mark on the team and its supporters.
The Rebuilding Phase
In his retirement announcement, Shuey expressed his confidence in the senior players who will guide the club forward. He emphasized the importance of the current rebuilding phase and the excitement surrounding the introduction of talented young players through the upcoming draft.
As the West Coast Eagles look to continue their storied history of success, Shuey’s presence will be missed both on and off the field. His dedication to high standards and his role as a role model for younger players cannot be understated.
Gratitude and Farewells
Shuey took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the club, his coaches, teammates, and staff for the opportunities and support they have given him throughout his career. He acknowledged the lifelong connections he has formed with his fellow premiership teammates and the friendships that will endure well beyond his retirement.
The retiring captain also thanked his wife Dani and his children Oliver and Georgia for their unwavering support. He expressed his excitement at the prospect of spending more time with his family, cherishing the moments he has missed during his demanding football career.
Tributes from the Club
West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson praised Shuey’s impact as both a player and a leader. Despite his ongoing injury struggles, Shuey has been a driving force in maintaining high standards within the team, setting an example for younger players to follow.
Chief executive Trevor Nisbett highlighted Shuey’s pivotal role in the team’s 2018 grand final comeback against Collingwood and commended his behind-the-scenes dedication and passion. Shuey’s legacy as one of only five Norm Smith medallists in club history will forever be remembered by Eagles fans.
A Celebrated Career
Shuey’s retirement brings an end to a remarkable career that saw him achieve personal success both on and off the field. With 141 goals and several accolades to his name, including the emerging talent award in 2011 and the club champion title in 2016 and 2019, Shuey leaves a lasting legacy as a key figure in the West Coast Eagles’ history.
As the AFL community bids farewell to Luke Shuey, the West Coast Eagles must now adapt to a new era and forge ahead in their pursuit of success. The void left by their retiring captain will undoubtedly be felt, but his contributions over the years will continue to inspire the team as they embark on their continued journey.
