The Concerns of Weight Loss Medications for Older Adults

In the world of weight loss, losing weight often means losing muscle. This is a concern, especially for older adults, as the more muscle they lose, the greater their risk of becoming frail or suffering fractures and falls. It is crucial for older adults to maintain muscle mass to stay mobile and independent.

Muscle mass naturally decreases with age, and when people lose large amounts of weight in a short time, such as with drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, the loss of muscle mass can be drastic and have serious health consequences. However, there is very little information available on how older adults in particular respond to these medications.

Risks and Side Effects of Weight Loss Medications for Older Adults

Clinical trials of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, have typically enrolled people in their 40s and 50s. People aged 65 and older who participated in these trials were more likely to experience gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and vomiting. They were also more likely to stop taking the medications due to side effects in general.

Older adults may also experience fatigue as a common side effect of these drugs, which can be the result of not eating enough while on the medications. Additionally, the significant weight loss caused by these medications can lead to a decrease in blood pressure, making them feel dizzy and weary. This is particularly concerning for older adults who are already at risk of orthostatic hypotension, a sudden drop in blood pressure when changing positions.

Older adults who have or are predisposed to osteoporosis should be cautious when taking these medications. Rapid weight loss can make their bones less dense, and since bones are constantly changing, weight loss reduces the mechanical force on them, potentially leading to bone loss. Weight loss can also impair calcium intake and absorption.

Protecting Against Muscle Loss in Older Adults

For anyone taking medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, but especially for older adults, it is vital to engage in regular strength training exercises, such as lifting weights, and consume enough protein to counteract muscle loss. Experts recommend older adults on these medications aim for at least 100 grams of protein per day, which can be challenging due to the medications’ appetite-suppressing effects.

Doctors may also prescribe lower doses of these medications for adults over 60 to minimize side effects and slow down weight loss. However, it is important for older adults to adjust their expectations and not strive to reach the body weight they had in their younger years. The focus should instead be on maintaining strength and overall health.

Overall, when it comes to weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, older adults should be cautious and consider the potential risks and side effects. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can assess individual circumstances and provide personalized guidance.
