World Ukraine War is Hurting Africa, South African President Ramaphosa Tells Putin

In a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and a group of African leaders in St. Petersburg, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his concern that the ongoing war in Ukraine is negatively impacting Africa. The meeting, which took place after the African leaders visited Ukraine on a peace mission, ended with no visible progress.

The African Peace Initiative

The African leaders, including the presidents of Comoros, Senegal, South Africa, and Zambia, as well as Egypt’s prime minister and senior officials from the Republic of Congo and Uganda, presented a peace plan consisting of 10 elements. However, the details of the proposal were not disclosed. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the plan was not formulated on paper, making it difficult to compare positions.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, while acknowledging that not all provisions of the African peace plan align with Russia’s position, indicated that President Putin has shown interest in considering it. Lavrov emphasized that the African leaders have demonstrated an understanding of the underlying causes of the crisis, which, according to Russia, were created by the West. He suggested that addressing these root causes should be the basis for resolving the conflict.

The Russian Perspective

According to Russia, its intervention in Ukraine was in response to perceived threats from Ukraine‘s desire to join NATO and its support from the United States and Western Europe. President Putin, speaking at an economic forum, announced that Russian tactical nuclear weapons have been deployed to Belarus as a deterrent against Western efforts to defeat Russia in Ukraine. While he assured that there was no immediate need for the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, he stated that Russia would use all means necessary to protect its statehood.

African Concerns

The mission to Ukraine by the African leaders, the first of its kind, holds particular importance for Africa. The continent relies on Russia and Ukraine for food and fertilizer deliveries, and the war has disrupted these crucial exports, impacting Africa‘s food security. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted the negative consequences of the conflict on Africa and expressed his hope for a swift resolution.

While recognizing the difficulties in achieving peace, Ramaphosa emphasized the need to end the conflict as soon as possible. The African leaders, representing a range of views on the war, expressed their willingness to assist in expediting the peace process. The delegation’s visit came amidst other peace initiatives, including one by China, while peace talks between Ukraine and Russia remain challenging due to their differing demands.

The Road Ahead

As Ukraine launches a counteroffensive to dislodge Russian forces from occupied areas, using advanced weapons supplied by Western allies, the chances for peace talks appear bleak. Ukraine demands the withdrawal of Russian troops from all occupied territories, while the Kremlin seeks Ukraine‘s recognition of Russia’s annexation of Crimea and other territorial gains.

With the African peace mission, Africa adds its voice to the international efforts to find a solution to the Ukrainian crisis. Africa‘s historical ties with Russia and Ukraine, dating back to the Cold War, make its engagement in the peace process significant.

In conclusion, the world is closely watching the developments in Ukraine, as the impact of the conflict is felt far beyond its borders. It is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize dialogue, compromise, and peaceful resolution in order to prevent further destabilization and protect the interests of all nations involved, including Africa.
