The Witcher Season 2 Recap: What to Remember Before Season 3

An Unlikely Partnership

In the second season of The Witcher, viewers witnessed the unfolding of an unlikely partnership between the powerful mage Yennefer, thought to be dead after the Battle of Sodden, and the enchantress Fringilla, who was aligned with Nilfgaard. The two mages were captured by Francesca, an Elven warrior, and were taken to a dig site where they discovered the prison of Voleth Meir, a demon seeking to use their pain for her own gain.

This partnership between Fringilla, Francesca, and Voleth Meir led to an alliance that made the North uneasy and increased prejudice against the elves. Cahir, who had initially escaped from the mages, returned to Cintra and pledged his allegiance to Fringilla, solidifying her leadership skills in Emperor Emhyr’s eyes.

Yennefer on the Run

After her encounter with Voleth Meir, Yennefer decided to leave Fringilla and the elves and return to Aretuza. She was welcomed by some, but others were wary of her disappearance. Yennefer had to prove her loyalty to the Brotherhood by executing Cahir, but at the last minute, she freed him and fled with him to Oxenfurt.

In Oxenfurt, Yennefer and Cahir encountered Jaskier, the Continent’s favorite bard also known as the Sandpiper. They realized that Jaskier had been helping elves flee the North under the guise of his performances. Yennefer and Jaskier reconnected and shared their heartbreak over losing Geralt. However, their reunion was short-lived as Yennefer and Jaskier were captured by the Oxenfurt guard.

Kaer Morhen

Guilt-ridden over Yennefer’s disappearance, Geralt brought Ciri to Kaer Morhen, a fortress where Witchers rest and train. Along the way, they encountered an old friend of Geralt’s, Nivellan, who had been cursed and turned into a beast. The curse was eventually broken, but not without consequences.

Geralt and Ciri arrived at Kaer Morhen, where they were greeted by Geralt’s mentor Vesemir and other Witchers seeking refuge. While there, they discovered that Ciri had Elder Blood, which indicated rare and powerful magic. Vesemir saw this as an opportunity to make more Witchers and protect the continent.

Monoliths, Prophecies, and Destiny

Triss arrived at Kaer Morhen to help Ciri with her powers and to investigate the mutated monsters. Ciri revealed that she accidentally knocked over a monolith outside of Cintra, which led to the appearance of the mutated creatures. Geralt and Istredd investigated the monoliths together and discovered their connection to different spheres.

During their journey, Ciri and Geralt encountered a mutated Leshy and a Myriapod. Ciri’s powers were further revealed, and it was believed that she could potentially fulfill a prophecy that spoke of her destroying the world. However, Ciri and Geralt were able to defeat the creatures and return to Kaer Morhen.

The White Flame’s Arrival

Emperor Emhyr arrived in Cintra, revealing himself to be Ciri’s father. He had orchestrated the murder of Francesca’s baby to distract the elves and gain control over Cintra. Fringilla and Cahir, who had vouched for the baby’s death, were arrested for their deception.

Voleth Meir and the Wild Hunt

Yennefer brought Ciri to Voleth Meir, where a series of events led to Ciri being possessed and using her powers to open a portal. Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri found themselves in another sphere, pursued by the Wild Hunt. They eventually made their way back to Kaer Morhen, where Yennefer used her powers to heal the wounded.

Despite the challenges they faced, Ciri’s powers and destiny remained a focal point for Redania and the Northern Kingdoms. Spymaster Sigismund Dijkstra and court mage Philippa Eilhart sought to use Ciri’s abilities for their own gain, while others recognized the potential danger she posed.
