English Premier League: Ticketing Troubles for Arsenal in Delayed Opener
Published Aug. 12, 2023 11:54 a.m. ET
Arsenal‘s Premier League season opener against Nottingham Forest was marred by ticketing troubles, resulting in a delayed start. The game eventually kicked off after a 30-minute delay, caused by the malfunctioning of the club’s new digital ticketing system. Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka scored in the first half to give Arsenal a 2-0 lead, before Taiwo Awoniyi pulled one back for Nottingham Forest late in the game. Despite a nervy finish, Arsenal held on to secure a 2-1 victory in their opener.
Ticketing Troubles Cause Delayed Start
The opening of the match was delayed due to technical issues with Arsenal‘s new digital ticketing system. Tens of thousands of supporters were unable to enter the stadium on time. After resolving the issue, the gates finally opened and the game commenced with a 30-minute delay.
Arsenal Takes an Early Lead
Arsenal dominated the first half, with Eddie Nketiah opening the scoring in the 26th minute. He was brilliantly set up by Gabriel Martinelli, who showcased his skills by beating two defenders with a spin move and delivering a backheel flick to Nketiah, whose shot found the back of the net with a slight deflection. Just six minutes later, Bukayo Saka extended Arsenal‘s lead with a spectacular left-footed long-range strike into the far corner.
Nottingham Forest‘s Late Effort Falls Short
Despite Nottingham Forest‘s efforts, they struggled to create clear opportunities and mount a comeback. Substitute Taiwo Awoniyi managed to score in the 83rd minute, providing a glimmer of hope for the visitors. However, Arsenal‘s defense held firm, and Forest could not find an equalizer during seven minutes of stoppage time.
Arsenal‘s Summer Signings and Injury Concerns
All three of Arsenal‘s summer signings, Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber, started the game. However, Timber had to be substituted early in the second half due to a leg injury. In addition, Gabriel Jesus was absent due to injury, and Oleksandr Zinchenko was not fully fit, resulting in Gabriel Martinelli and Jurrien Timber filling in their positions.
Player Performance and Manager’s Words
Eddie Nketiah, who started in place of the injured Gabriel Jesus, expressed satisfaction with both his personal performance and the team’s performance. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Nketiah’s dedication in training and acknowledged his contribution to the team’s victory. Despite the nervy finish, Arteta commended the team’s defensive display.
Outlook for the Season
Arsenal‘s win in their season opener provides a positive start to their Premier League campaign. The performance of their summer signings, along with the return of injured players, will play a crucial role in determining their success this season. Additionally, addressing the ticketing troubles is necessary to ensure a smooth matchday experience for the fans.
