Tunisia and EU Sign Pact to Stem Migration

On July 16, Tunisia and the European Union (EU) signed a “strategic partnership” deal aimed at combatting human traffickers and tightening borders in light of a sharp increase in boats leaving Tunisia for Europe. The agreement, which comes after weeks of negotiations, also includes a pledge of major financial aid to Tunisia from Europe, amounting to 1 billion euros ($1.12 billion), to help the country recover its battered economy, stabilize state finances, and address the migration crisis. However, most of these funds are conditional on Tunisia implementing economic reforms.
