Sam Docherty, the former Carlton skipper and cancer survivor, has been awarded the prestigious 2023 Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award for his exceptional work in raising funds for cancer research and supporting children’s charities. Docherty’s inspiring journey, overcoming testicular cancer not once but twice, has been a source of inspiration for many.
Raising Funds and Creating Awareness
Docherty’s relentless efforts have seen him raise an astounding $220,000 for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation. As an observer on the board of the Peter Mac Cancer Foundation, he has been actively involved in advocating for cancer testing and detection, aiming to save lives through early detection.
In addition to his work with the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation, Docherty has also extended his support to the Paws4Kids program, run by the MacKillop Family Services. This program supports vulnerable children in their journey back to the classroom by providing therapy dogs as a form of support.
