LIGHTSCAPE Returns with New Light Installations at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

A Mesmerizing After-Dark Experience

LIGHTSCAPE, an extraordinary after-dark experience at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, is set to make a comeback with a brand-new trail starting from 16 June 2023. This unique event promises to mesmerize visitors with its stunning light installations, including an eight-metre sphere adorned with over 20,000 moving LEDs, singing trees, and a flickering fire garden. The trail, spanning two kilometers around the lake, will feature color-changing installations, soundscapes, and large-scale illuminated sculptures. Over 100,000 tiny lights will illuminate the path, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of nature in a whole new light after dusk.

New Installations and Surprises

This year, LIGHTSCAPE organizers are excited to bring new and exciting installations to this familiar setting. The event is produced by Culture Creative Ltd in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria and Sony Music. Zoe Bottrell, the Managing Director of Culture Creative, expressed her enthusiasm for the second iteration of LightScape, stating, “Designing and building a light trail for a second time allows us to bring new and exciting installations into a familiar setting – now we know the possibilities, so it’s even more thrilling than the first time.”

Visitors can expect surprises along the trail, with color-changing installations, large-scale illuminated sculptures, and more immersive experiences. One highlight returning by popular demand is the Winter Cathedral, a crowd favorite from last year. However, all other light installations will be brand new to Melbourne, ensuring a fresh and captivating experience for returning and first-time visitors alike.

A Winter Wonderland of Food and Drink

In addition to the captivating light installations, LIGHTSCAPE will also feature the return of popular food trucks and pop-up bars. Hungry visitors can indulge in a variety of new food options while immersing themselves in the enchanting atmosphere of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.

A Global Success Story

LIGHTSCAPE, created in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment, made its debut in Melbourne earlier in 2022 to overwhelming success. The event originated at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the UK 11 years ago and has since captivated audiences around the world. Last season alone, more than two million people experienced the illuminated trails at various venues in the UK and the US, including botanic gardens, National Trust sites, and UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Praise from Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria and Sony Music

Professor Tim Entwisle, Director, and Chief Executive of Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria expressed his delight at LIGHTSCAPE‘s return, stating, “LIGHTSCAPE was an overwhelming success in 2022, and we are delighted that this world-class event is returning to Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne so that Victorians can again enjoy our Gardens in a whole new light.”

Vanessa Picken, Chair & CEO of Sony Music – Australia and New Zealand, emphasized the unique immersive experience that LIGHTSCAPE offers, saying, “This is an incredible opportunity to see music and light intertwine for a unique immersive experience in Melbourne. I am looking forward to seeing these multi-sensory sensations come to life.”
