Carlton’s Sam Docherty Wins 2023 Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award

CARLTON’S inspirational Sam Docherty has claimed the 2023 Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award. A beacon of hope for those battling illness, the Blues veteran has used his platform to raise awareness and vital funds for cancer research, having recovered twice from testicular cancer. An Observer to the Board of the Peter Mac Cancer Foundation, Docherty plays an active role both inside and outside the football club in his fundraising efforts. He is also an ambassador for MacKillop Family Services’ Paws4Kids program, an initiative which helps vulnerable children get back into the classroom through the support of therapy dogs.

Leading On and Off the Field

Docherty, known for his leadership on the field, has been recognized for his inspiring work off it. He joins former teammate Dennis Armfield in receiving the Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award, which honors players who embody the values of the late Melbourne champion in their commitment to helping others and representing the game off the field.

Doing It for Doc Initiative

Docherty’s remarkable journey includes his return to the field in 2022 after battling cancer and continuing his off-field role in 2023. In collaboration with fellow cancer survivor Ben Cunnington, Docherty helped raise over $200,000 for the Good Friday Appeal ahead of a record-breaking Good Friday SuperClash. He also serves as an ambassador for the Peter Mac Cup, joining teammates and opponents to support the Peter Mac Cancer Centre in the lead-up to the AFL’s longest-running charity match between Carlton and Collingwood.

A Source of Inspiration

Speaking about his nomination for the award, Docherty expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to inspire others given his platform in the game. He emphasized the importance of giving back, particularly to those going through tough times, as he himself battled cancer. Docherty also highlighted the influence of Jim Stynes, acknowledging him as the pinnacle of off-field excellence and the inspiration behind players’ increased involvement in charity work.

Praise for Docherty’s Contributions

AFL Chief Executive Gillon McLachlan and Carlton CEO Brian Cook both commended Docherty for his dedication and advocacy in helping those affected by cancer. McLachlan praised Docherty’s ability to use his personal experience to provide hope and raise funds, while Cook described him as a selfless and generous person who makes a positive impact on and off the field.

A Generous Reward

Proudly supported by Telstra and the Jim Stynes Foundation, Docherty will receive $40,000 which will be donated to a charity or community program of his choice.

About the Jim Stynes Foundation
