World’s Oldest Dog, Bobi, Passes Away at 31
Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo Portuguese dog, has claimed the title of the world’s oldest dog ever, surpassing the previous record holder, Bluey, an Australian cattle dog who died in 1939 at the age of 29 and five months. Sadly, Bobi, who lived on a farm in the village of Conqueiros in Portugal, passed away over the weekend at the age of 31 years and 165 days.
Bobi‘s Secret to a Long Life
In an interview earlier this year, Bobi‘s owner, Leonel Costa, revealed the secret to his dog’s long life. Costa attributed Bobi‘s longevity to good food, fresh air, and lots of love. He emphasized that Bobi “eats what we eat,” suggesting a balanced and nutritious diet. Furthermore, Bobi had never been put on a lead, allowing him to roam freely and enjoy a calm and peaceful environment away from the bustling cities.
It is worth noting that the Rafeiro do Alentejo breed, to which Bobi belonged, has an average life expectancy of around 10 to 14 years. Therefore, Bobi‘s remarkable longevity can be seen as an exception, and his owner’s attention to his diet, environment, and happiness likely played a significant role in his prolonged lifespan.
A Life Well-Lived
Dr Karen Becker, a veterinarian who had the pleasure of interacting with Bobi on multiple occasions, took to Facebook to announce his passing. She expressed her admiration for Bobi‘s life and the invaluable lessons he taught the world. Despite living longer than any other dog in history, Dr Becker acknowledged that Bobi‘s time on Earth could never be enough for those who loved him. Her heartfelt farewell message serves as a testament to the special bond between humans and their animal companions.
